Pecan Harvest Festival

October 17, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Join the Skip Shockley Foundation on October 17th from 2-6pm at Opportunity Park in South Dallas for a fun, FREE, educational event learning about the history of pecans in Southern Dallas. Pecan facts will be posted along the park, vendors, food vendors, art contest for kids, raffles and more.

Native pecans are a Slow Food Ark of Taste product that grows in Texas. Originally renowned for their tough, difficult to crack shells, the fruits of the American Native Pecan tree (Carya illinoinensis) are the inspiration for the tree’s name. The entomological root of pecan is ‘pacane,’ which comes from the Algonquin language and means “nut so hard as to require a stone to crack.”
